The safety of road network users is a fundamental goal of a modern transportation system. Safety is most commonly assessed by the number of traffic accidents and the severity of their consequences. In the Republic of Croatia, hazardous locations on the road network are continuously identified, and their remediation plays an important role in reducing the number of traffic accidents and mitigating their consequences. This paper analyzes the extent to which the processes of identifying and remediating hazardous locations have contributed to reducing the number of traffic accidents. The research includes a comparative analysis of a three-year period before and a three-year period after the implementation of remediation measures, with the objective of providing relevant insight into the effectiveness of the applied measures and their contribution to increasing road safety.

In the paper, various approaches to measuring and documenting traffic accident investigations were analysed: traditional measuring wheels and modern motion sensor – based measuring devices. The research showed that motion sensor – based measuring devices, specifically “Moasure One Pro” device, provide significant advantages in precision, speed and efficiency in conducting investigations compared to traditional measuring wheels. The time required to conduct the investigation was significantly shorter with the motion sensor – based measuring devices, while data transfer to software applications such as “AutoCAD” and “PC – Crash” was almost instantaneous. In conclusion, the introduction of advanced technologies into everyday practice can significantly improve the quality and efficiency of traffic accident investigations.

Pedestrians are a special category of road traffic participants. The special feature of pedestrian traffic is that it is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or knowledge of traffic. Pedestrians do not usually wear protective clothing and have a low and vulnerable position on the road compared to other road users. In road accidents involving pedestrians, 96% of those involved were injured due to inadequate pedestrian protection. Pedestrians are responsible for about 20% of all road traffic fatalities, although the proportion of road accidents involving pedestrians is only 4%. This shows that pedestrians are an extremely vulnerable group of participants. Therefore, this paper presents an analysis of all traffic accidents involving pedestrians in a five-year period in the Republic of Croatia. It is analysed in which locations and for what reasons traffic accidents occur in which pedestrians suffer fatal consequences. The analysis is conducted so that the micro-locations where pedestrian accidents occur can be further investigated.

The analysis of each traffic accident is carried out based on recorded traces at the scene of the traffic accident and the damage caused to vehicles. One of the basic parameters in the analysis of traffic accidents is the mutual position of the vehicle at the time of the collision. To define the collision position of the vehicle, it is necessary to determine the intensity and compliance of the vehicle damage. The development of photogrammetry has enabled the creation of 3D models based on which the intensity and mutual compliance of vehicle damage can be more clearly shown, which increases the relevance of the determined collision position of the vehicle. Accordin gly, this paper will present the process of creating 3D models of damaged vehicles and will analyze all the possibilities of applying photogrammetry in defining the collision positions of vehicles.
