    Reverse engineering in automotive design component

    The paper presents the possibilities of using reverse engineering in the digitization of automotive components and their modification. A CAD model of the part was created based on the scanned point clouds. Subsequently, this model was compared with the original cloud points. The point clouds were scanned by a laser 3D scanner in PolyWorks software. The reference 3D model was created from a point cloud in the CATIA program. The comparison of the scanned point cloud and the reference model is performed in PolyWorks. The Check IMAlign project module is used for this. This module allows you to compare the scanned point cloud, it is merged from several scanned lines into one whole point cloud, which are created by a CAD model. The preparation of the 3D scanning arm FARO PLATINUM ARM and the process of scanning the prototype of the front fender of the car are described.

    This paper presents some of the research results on a fundamental and applicative procedures regarding the integrated intelligent conception of a Romanian series of hydraulic gear pumps. Following the analysis of the pump series in the manufacturing process, the requirement for a modernized parametric design of this product has been identified. Thus, we observed the beneficiaries’ requirement for certain flows that are currently not provided by the current range of pumps. The parametric design of the pump leads to an easy and adaptive modification of the supplied flows, resulting in an innovative methodology which is very useful for the design and process engineers. The methodology is based on a computer-aided 3D modeling, specific pressure, drive torque, flow rate, etc. Each of these parameters leads to the intelligent modification of the certain geometric and functional features of the pump series designed to be adaptable to the dynamic demands of a modern economy.

    Flexible Manufacturing Systems provide a fast reaction possibility to the changes in production conditions. As production conditions change, other changes in the final product like changes of the product variants, or other unpredictable events may be also expected. Nowadays most of the products are designed by using the CAx software. The product design 3D model contains not only the geometrical data of product, but may contain a part of the process plan and technological data as well.

    This fact is a reason to quick reaction time possibilities in the manufacturing system settings.
