Modelling of LTL routes for eco-diversed transport application

  • 1 Kielce University of Technology, Poland

Abstract

This study addresses the vehicle routing problem (VRP) for eco-diverse transport fleets, defined as fleets comprising vehicles with heterogeneous engine systems, resulting in varied payload capacities, access restrictions, and levels of cost-efficiency and environmental performance. The research is driven by the growing integration of alternative fuel vehicles (e.g., electric and hydrogen-powered) into conventional transport fleets, coupled with the implementation of Clean Transport Zones (EcoZones) that impose access restrictions on combustion (diesel) vehicles. A two-stage, highly scalable bi-objective optimization algorithm is proposed, evaluated using a real-world case study involving the distribution of 356 pallets across 188 destinations within an approximate 140 km radius of Kielce, with 25% of these destinations located in potential EcoZone areas. The analysis assesses feasibility, ecological and economic cost intensity, and workload distribution across fleet segments under energy and access constraints. The developed algorithm demonstrates significant potential for prescriptive analytics in optimizing routing strategies amid the energy transition in the transportation sector.
