This paper presents a practical application of the authors’ universal algorithm for optimal planning in combinatorially complex problems, using the strip cutting problem in the production of electric-welded pipes as a case study. The algorithm is based on a synthesis of duality theory and an iterative approach. It implements a mechanism for selecting or generating new promising alternatives based on dual estimates, enabling the identification of a near-globally optimal solution without exhaustive enumeration. This holds true under conditions of both complete and partial a priori determinacy of the solution set.

The aim of this research is to develop and implement a smart microfactory concept for use in engineering studies as well as for the overall promotion of technical studies at TTK Tallinn University of Applied Sciences. The microfactory allows students to directly engage with a small-scale manufacturing cycle which includes many of the processes found in an actual industrial factory, such as production planning, material handling, quality control and production feedback and optimisation. Pencil sharpening was chosen as the production task. For this purpose, several devices were designed and manufactured which utilise a variety of different sensors and a collaborative robot UR3. The production unit also incorporates a manufacturing execution system (MES) that students can develop and refine themselves. Thanks to a hands-on approach which combines both theoretical studies and practical experience, students are able to observe the effect of their decisions to a production process in a miniature yet realistic environment.

Planning and simulation in assembly processes and whole production systems by computer aided systems is currently an advantage of big major companies. However, computer aided technologies in field of planning and simulation of production systems and assembly systems are future of every one company if they want to remain competitive. Computer aided systems in assembly and simulation of production processes help to save time thus financial resources needed for planning and optimization of every production systems and sub-systems. This kind of computer aided systems are helping to eliminate errors in production processes and assembly systems before they can happen in reality. This paper deals with possibilities of improvement in production process planning by use of appropriate software. In this case we will use Tecnomatix Plant Simulation by SIEMENS company which. Use of this software is aimed for planning and optimizing of production systems with high level of complexity.
